Dealing first with the hybrid teas, I would place 'Alec's Red' (1970) at the top of the list. It was raised by Alec Cocker from 'Duftwolke' ('Fragrant Cloud') x 'Dame de Coeur' and the awards of the President's International Trophy and the Henry Edland Medal for fragrance speak for themselves. Growth is strong and bushy, densely foliaged down to soil level and disease-resistant. The blooms are not glamorous; they are large, full-petalled and somewhat globular, making it perhaps better as a garden rose than one for the show bench, although some blooms well up to exhibition standard can be expected. The colour is rich and stable; cherry red is the official description, although to me this does not quite convey the colour intensity; The fragrance is strong and adequate, for a rose of this hue. There are no major faults, although it is not always of immaculate shape and it is perhaps the most dependable red rose introduced in the past ten years.

Cocker/Harkness advertisement. ....The name was given by the trade, who one and all referred to seedling 3077A as Alec's Red, while Alec Cocker was trying to think of a more stately name for it. So 'Alec's Red' stuck.

The President's International Trophy and a Gold Medal were won by 'Alec's Red'. It will be remembered that this fine red Hybrid Tea, by Cocker, won the Henry Edland Memorial Medal and a Certificate of Merit in 1969. Since then it has shown itself to be a vigorous cultivar and an excellent repeater.

Alec's Red Outstanding in the open field trial ground at our nursery has been a dark-red rose, a daughter of 'Fragrant Cloud', raised by Alec Cocker, of Aberdeen. All through its entensive trials, here and elsewhere, it has been affectionately referred to as 'Alec's Red' and that... is the name under which it is now to be introduced... It is of ideal bedding habit; a deep red, unfading flower that is always in bloom, and a strong grower to boot. A variety I can thoroughly recommend which is indeed a credit to its raiser, a newcomer to the business of breeding... dark crimson, slightly paler reverse... [One of Harry Wheatcroft's selections of the Best Hybrid Teas.]

Dr. Thomas, [Victoria].  The New Ones.
Of course, the 1969 winners of the R.N.R.S. President's Trophy (best new rose in the R.N.R.S. Trial Grounds) and the Henry Edland Memorial Trophy (for fragrance) have not been on sale in Australia yet but they will be available in the Winter of 1970 or 1971 and so a report by one of England's best growers is worth quoting.
Alex's Red is not outstanding in form but its perfume is strong - not much better, however, than several of the other new roses.
