Moss and Provence Roses.
Their beautiful buds and delicious fragrance render these great favourites, and deservedly so.
Pruning.—These should be slightly pruned. Remove all old wood, thin out some of the past season's shoots where overcrowded, shorten the laterals of those remaining, and cut back the young growths to about six eyes. Prune in February or March.
Old Pink... Pale rose; large. One of the best. Fine in bud. Introduced 1596.

Common Moss. 1720? Summer Flowering. Rather large, pink cupped, quite Centifolia character, good scent. Pedicel and calyx heavily mossed, also calyx much fringed and longer than bud. (See Plate 29.) Wood red, thickly set with many large and small straight thorns. Leaves rather large, edged red when young, held out flat. Growth spreading.
Having examined the Herbarium specimen of Miller's Moss at the South Kensington Museum, I fancy ours is a larger form of the original Moss Rose of the early eighteenth century.

Moss Roses are forms of the Cabbage Roses which bear a crown of lacy moss upon the stems and sepals. They are exquisitely lovely in bud. Absolutely hardy. They should be given good soil and careful attention to bring out their best qualities, but they live and produce fair blooms when completely neglected.
Old Pink Moss. (Common or Old Moss; Communis). (Appeared in Holland about 1596.) Splendidly mossed buds, and globular pale rose flowers. Vigorous growth. One of the most beautiful and most highly prized of all.
