Damask, and Gallica or French Roses
A hundred years ago, these types were the most highly prized of all Roses. Their hardiness and fragrance have been handed down to the modern Hybrid Perpetuals and Hybrid Teas, but they are still most attractive in their genuine old-fashioned way. We are glad we can offer a good selection of these very scarce old sorts.

Rosa condidorum (rose of Brussa [Bursa]). This interesting old rose, which is not a damask, but a direct descendant of R. gallica, is extraordinarily popular in Anatolia under the name "sweets rose". It is almost exclusively used for preparation or fragrancing of sweets and is sometimes crystallized, as one crystallizes fruit. Especially the Greek peasants in Anatolia prefer this rose versus the Kazanlik roses, as the stronger local demand makes its culture more profitable.

Fig. 1.

Fig. 1.

Fig. 1. The French Rose. (Rosa gallica L.) This Rose derives its name (Zucker rose) from being converted in apothecaries into what (they usually call) the conserve and syrup of roses, and being of all kinds of roses the most grateful, as well to the smell, as to the taste. It grows pretty high, and is found in great abundance in our gardens abiding the rigorous winters extremly well. Ist flower makes a slight appearance being some what sickly, its colour is of a dusky rose-red inclinirg to the crimson.
