There are lots of beautiful bloom pictures, but none of the bush habit. Does anybody have any pictures? And does 'Arrillaga' set hips?

Patricia, 'Arrillaga' has a lax growth habit and requires support to grow tall. This said the old specimen at Sequoia Nursery must have been at least twenty feet tall growing up into an old tree. My specimen is over 10 year old and I've never observed a hip. It could be my climate is too warm to initiate hip formation for this cultivar. 'Arrillaga' is essentially a once bloomer for me. It is very beautiful.

Thanks Robert. That once-blooming doesn't quite jell wth the foundling I am thinking of. My foundlings only seem to bring to maturity one or two hips per bush and the pedicel mostly seems to have an S-bend. Do your 'Arrillaga' flowers end up like these blackened blobs?

Pat, I can't rule out 'Arrillaga' from your photo. We shouldn't rely too heavily on the tendency for my specimen to blossom only once. Many roses which are said to repeat in other climates do not repeat here, apparently due to climactic conditions.

Thanks Robert. I was trying to rule out 'Arrillaga' as a possibility for the "Pippie's Pottery Pink" mob (and which I have seen about 12 feet high up a wire fence). My notes on "PPP's" season say: Nov 13, 2007 good blooming; Jan 30, 2007 heavy blooming; March 4, 2007 10 blooms. It is challenging comparing roses from one of the wettest towns in Western Australia, to a rose that grows in the desert in America.

Named for Don Jose Arrillaga, twice Spanish governor of California. Buried at the Mission of Soledad. The large freeway sign in Santa Barbara has the name misspelled - Arrellaga!

I've always had a "thing" for this rose -- at its best it's a stunner. It's nice to know how it got its name. What a cruel irony that the freeway sign is misspelled, especially since there seems to be some confusion about the spelling amongst the great rose collections.

See the HMF Ezine article "Schoener's ‘ARRILLAGA’" by William Grant (DEC 2005) about this rose.

If both parents were zone 4b, it would seem that this would be hardier than zone 6b. This is a tough rose in Alaska and very resistant to rain damage.
