Alison Drummond, Hamilton, New Zealand.  A Search For Old Roses in New Zealand.
Another locality where old roses flourish is the Bay of Plenty.  We found R. canina, the Dog Rose, growing beside the old Military Cemetery, and the owners of the Mission House (now known as The Elms) at Tauranga, cherish the old varieties of roses hat look so well in that setting.  'Nanette',a low-growing purple Gallica, grows near to the front door, and the borders are studded with such gems (to me) as an unknown "buttonhole rose" of the 'Cecile Brunner' type - a perfect miniature Tea Rose on a tallish bush, but shading from delicate apricot to cream instead of from blush pink to "French' white.     'Perle d'Or' - nankeen yellow to primrose we also saw in Tauranga....

Small Roses
Sir, - In your issue for July 29 there was a very interesting article on "Roses Small but Vigorous", by G. S. Thomas. He says there is a sport of Cécile Brunner called Mme. Jules Thibaud and he has been unable to trace its date of origin.
I bought a bush of Mme. Jules Thibaud a few years ago and the grower said it was raised in 1790 . As Cécile Brunner was raised in 1881, Mme. Jules Thibaud would appear to be an older rose and not a sport of Cécile Brunner . MADELINE BRIGHT ( MRS. ) Reading.
