'Honorine Brabant' rose Reviews & Comments

I realize that some of the references claim that this rose is a sport of 'Commandant Beaurepaire', but if the latter is triploid and 'Honorine de Brabant' is tetraploid, doesn't that contradict the claim? Perhaps instead of being a sport it is a seedling?

I totally agree, the resemblance is just superficial

I hope someone can help me!
I bought this rose from Heirloom Roses 4 years ago. Their site says it's 6x4' which is a reasonable size for my garden. Well, it's more like 10x10' and doesn't look like it's going to stop growing. I've never pruned it because it blooms only once for me and for the first 2-3 years I loved the large, arching shape. Now it looks more like a gigantic squid from a monster movie. Plus, this past season was bad for blackspot and the center is defoliated.
It's now starting to bloom and I'm wondering what I should do. It's planted in front of a fence but not so close that I could train all of its canes as a climber. I'm afraid if I prune it back I'll forever lose that arching shape.
Has anyone dealt with this before? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

The age of the rose (circa 1840) is not shown in any of the references. Does anybody know the source?

No, I found no reference in that time frame, and I seriously doubt it is correct. The earliest reference I find is 'Honorine Brabant,' Tanne (presumably Remi/Remy Tanne of Rouen), 1916, in one Dutch rose list, with the rose classed as a Provins. I have few resources to track Dutch rose references.
Then everything skips to 1948 and the early 1950's, as best I can tell. I wonder if this may be a renamed old rose, i.e. a plant found in a garden, given a name, and put back into commerce. Harry Wheatcroft gives it that date of 1880, but I find nothing in Journal des roses or other contemporaneous references to substantiate that. Perhaps Harry Wheatcroft confused 'Honorine Brabant' with 'Duchesse de Brabant.' Another line of commentators observed similarities to 'Commandant Beaurepaire,' which was initially released as a Provins rose and then rereleased as a Hybrid Perpetual under a different name in 1878.
