This is not a happy plant in zone 5, I have read that Paul Neyron is rather picky, and I've only had one bloom, and very little cane re-growth after I recieved a transplant from Cliff Orent. Both Cass and Connie, of Hartwood Roses, have loevely photos of this rose, I'm not sure what the problem is, maybe that is had to suffer some very cold weather mid-spring in 2012.

My 'Schoener's Nutkana' in zone 4 took several years to establish itself. Now that it has built itself up, it is turning into a great plant, vigorous and healthy.

Palustris, it is good to know that it grows well in a colder climate, so it just must be my plant. Cass of Cass's Garden with Roses in California, and Connie of Hartwood Roses in Virginia both have beautiful examples of this rose, so I thought that maybe it favored a warmer climate.

I grew it in Newhall, California for about seventeen years and it was very happy in the arid heat with colder winters. MUCH healthier and happier than nasty old Paul Neyron ever was. I found if I let every flower form a hip, then stripped them all off, fertilized and watered it heavily, I could force a second flowering out of it regularly.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, for my shrub. That's a great idea for a second blooming.

I don't deadhead because this rose produces large oval orange hips. Be sure to remove them over the winter, however. I didn't, and they were still on the plant for the spring flush. I suspect they suppressed some spring bloom.

Schoener's Nutkana has been blooming on new canes produced this summer since June. I suspect that it could be called reblooming rather than once-blooming, and another season will tell. It is reblooming despite no deadheading of the lovely large oval hips.

Schoener's Nutkana produces a decent fall flush. It's quite a sight, with those enormous orange hips and a smattering of blooms.
