Peter Beales:  The rose on the screen now is Gardenia.  It's not the most free flowering but it's perhaps the most beautiful in its flower form.  We acquired this rose quite by chance.  Some cuttings were sent to us from a lady in Jersey and she had it under a different name but it was obvious when it flowered in the nursery that it was not the rose she thought it was.  We went to some trouble, including sending samples to Graham Thomas, to discover its proper name and we came to the conclusion that it was Gardenia.  This is a rose that should be more widely distributed because it is superb.  The foliage, too, is rather nice.

p. 93: Two wichuriana ramblers we admire greatly, the single Jersey Beauty, and the double Gardenia, inherit their large creamy-yellow flowers from their parent, Perle des Jardins.

p. 185: Two early American ramblers, with large creamy-yellow flowers, were raised from a cross between R. wichuriana and the straw-yellow Tea Rose, Perle des Jardins - a favourite inn some of our older gardens. Unfortunately, we do not grow either of these beautiful roses. ...its double counterpart, Gardenia, was known in the United States as a hardy Maréchal Niel. Both these plants thrive in the sulphur-laden air of Rotorua, in the heart of one of our thermal districts, where they are growing in a garden once owned by a man who used to drive the old mail coaches...

Gardenia (1899). I never thought of this favorite of mine as a Rambler yet so it is by birth, but the semidouble flowers are larger, to 2 to 3 inches, and in small sorays on short, strong stems rather than in tight clusters. A lovely, lovely rose, with pointed yellow buds, creamy-white, yellow-centered flowers. The dark glossy foliage is very resistant. No trouble, this one.

Gardenia.  Really a wonderful variety that is tractable in making pillars or training in any special way;  also disease free.    It is one of the hardiest climbers in getting close to yellow.    Its medium sized, well formed buds open to cream colored blooms.    On the old place I had a 12 ft pillar and it was a sight to behold as it did not freeze down so easily as the rest.
