Golden Moss (Moss) A relatively recent moss rose with little to commended it beyond the unusual colour and perhaps it’s scent. 1932 (S) 5 x 3’.

....At  no time has the Moss  rose been an easy  subject for breeding, for the prototypes were sterile sports. However sterility is not always so complete as it appears and Pedro Dot raised 'Golden Moss', introduced by the Conard-Pyle  Co.   in 1932; it came from  'Frau Karl  Druschki x   (Souvenir de Claudius  Pernef x 'Blanche  Moreau'), that is Hybrid Perpetual, Hybrid Tea and, Moss. I fear the name was  a considerable exaggeration.

Pedro Dot (Spain)...introduced 'Golden Moss' in 1932. This variety, a cross of Frau Karl Druschki x (Souv. de Claudius Pernet x Blanche Moreau) grew upright, similar to Frau Karl Druschki and bore well mossed buds which opened into soft peach-yellow flowers. Spring bloom only.

Golden Moss. M. (P. Dot; int. C-P, '32.) Frau Karl Druschki X (Souv. de Claudius Pernet X Blanche Moreau). Bud globular, peach-yellow, sepals well mossed; fl. dbl. (37 petals), open, fragrant, tawny yellow; cluster of 3-5 on long stem. Fol. almost rugose. Vig.; scanty bloom.

Without hothouses and cultivating in open fields I have obtained Hybrids which are difficult to achieve, such as those of Rosa Moyesii and Hybrids of Bracteata, among which I may quote Nevada; also Golden Moss and lastly some Hybrids of Indica Minima or of Roulettei……. [a description follows of Pedro Dot’s “automatic system” of pollination whereby the pollen parent is suspended above the seed parent flower in a paper cone.]
