My Liv Tyler died after its first winter here in Cambridge, England, hardiness zone 8! The winter was colder than usual, but still within the z 8 parameters. As to the plant, it came directly from Meilland-Richardier, looked better than most of what I've received from them so far (runts, usually), but proved to be not terribly vigourous. It bloomed only once or twice. I was shocked when I first saw its garish sweet salmon pink colored flowers - they looked like nothing of the soft pink in the catalogue and stood out like sore thumb in my garden. Even the wonderful sweet and fruity perfume couldn't make up for it. Thus, it's not much of a loss to me, and I recommend that before you get one, think twice and also check out the pics here. The color is very striking and extremely difficult to place in the garden. But it would make a fantastic lighthouse rose - visible for 10 miles through the thickest fog!

i have a liv tyler rose that is growing these weird canes, they are thick, with red crinkled leaves, the leaves bunch together and in the middle is some sort of a rose that looks to me like a cabbage, this has happened 4times, i keep pulling the canes off but fast as i get rid of one another pops up. They were coming from the bottom of the bush, so i thought it was a sucker, but this is an own root rose, then i noticed it started taking over a healthy cane, where it once produce roses, now it is producing what i just described. What should i do? Does this mean i need to shovel the bush?

Take a look at this e-book on Rose Rosette Disease and see if that is the problem.

thank you, Rosaholics Southern California Garden:

I went to the WWW.Rosette Disease website, and i did indeed see pics of what has been happening to my rose. My liv tyler is indeed infected with rose rosette disease. I will shovel it, its sad to see this happen, i spray weekly but it hasnt help in this case. According to the site my rose cannot be saved and my be a danger to the other roses.

thank you again for your help

I'm sorry to hear that. But at least now you know and can do what you have to for the sake of the rest of your garden.

I was a little skepticle to purchase liv tyler rose after reading some comments about her not liking to get wet. I thought a rose that doesnot like water, strange. But i took the plunge anyway (a softie for a pretty petal and a nice scent). Today i can say iam glad i did. The water doesnt bother my rose at all. She stays just as beautiful as she is when she is dry. aggressive grower, beautiful old fashioned bloom rose. No black spot or mildew.

I smelled it today for the first time, at a nursery. It smells like apricots! I've never smelled a rose like that before. I like it.
