'Mme  Gregoire Staechelin'  Climber   Pink   Early summer   P7    H6   ****
If you don't mind a rose which has finished blooming before most have started, you may find a home for this gorgeous thing. Having one short time in flower, it makes a rare spectacle of it. Large double pink roses, delightfully creased as a dainty skirt might be, cover most  of the plant and issue a sweet fragrance. It is hardy, despite being raised in sunny Spain, and we grow it on walls with chilly aspects very well. It can be kept within one storey height if desired, or allowed to grow higher. Don't remove the old flowers, because they turn into large hips, and no more will follow in any case. Raised by Pedro Dot  from 'Frau  Karl Druschki' x 'Château  de Clos Vougeot' and introduced in 1927. The Conard-Pyle Company brought it out in the United States in 1929 as 'Spanish Beauty'.

...In unserm Garten blüht eine vielbewunderte Kletterrose, in einem unvergesslichen zarten Rosaton, gross, schön, edel, langstielig, duftend - eben vielbewundert. Es ist die 'Mme. Grégoire Staechelin', die Pedro Dot 1927 einer Baslerin geschenkt hatte. Die Eltern dieser Sorte: 'Druschki x Château Clos Vougeot'. Gute Rasse also! Rose Nomenclature
By the Editor
As no doubt some of our members are aware, a very unsatisfactory situation with respect to Rose names has arisen within the past few years due to the practice of certain large commercial firms in re-naming Roses of European origin, contrary to and in defiance of "International Rules of Botanical Nomenclature" and its supplementary schedule known as Appendix VII (Nomenclature of Garden Plants).
Valid Name: Mme. Gregoire Staechelin
Re-christened: Spanish Beauty
Magazine  (Jul 1948)  Page(s) 3. trimester, p. 24.

Mr S. R. Bird.  Random Notes From Auckland
Spanish Beauty (Mme. Gregoire Staechelin), at the Gribblehirst Park Rose Garden, Auckland, is a first rate climbing Rose of various shades of pink. It would be a "beauty" even if it were not Spanish.
