This one always looks nice at the parks, but when I go to smell it -- nothing! I dont smoke, I eat mostly whole foods, and so on. My nose is in great shape :P Like, sniffing Fragrant Cloud makes me want to gag. Its so overpowering. This one just isnt snifferific. But it looks like it should, when you bend down to smell it.

With that said, it looks very modern, in a nice little mound of purple-red blooms all summer long.

I am waiting for an Austin red that has the best of all worlds. Falstaff was REALLY healthy and vigorous. The blooms and scent were to die for. But it decided it was a Hybrid Perpetual, giving a few blooms in spring and a few blooms in autumn. It spent the remaining time growing... and growing... and growing. lol it became 3' W x 8'T by year 4.

The prior Austin reds are diseased badly here, but have all the wonderful traits, except for the first few, with their wicked thorns. Maybe 2018 is the big year for the "just right" Austin red... or 2020? Who knows!

Agree: I grew Darcy Bussell in a pot, and there's a light scent if the weather is humid enough ...otherwise zero scent. I hope for the scent to be stronger in my alkaline clay. In contrast, the Dark Lady's old-rose-scent is very good at Chicago Botanical Garden, right after tons of rain.
