Seedlings I produced using pollen were disappointing. I gave them away.

It may have done you a favor.

I was going to order another one to give it a second shot but based on your comments Robert I think I'll pass. Thanks for the input.

I didn't try it for seed. It did set hips.

It could be a didn't pair it with the right seed parent, but as I said, in my experience it wasn't the greatest.

I tossed it out a couple of seasons ago.

In my opinion the growth habit leaves much to be desired and the prickles were vicious.

It did repeat but only modestly.

In a colder climate it might be a different story.

Late Spring 2010 update on Cape Diamond for Southern CT Z6. What a fabulous performer this year! I planted three shrub together and once it came alive earlier this Spring it hasn't stopped since. The first huge flush is over with but what a great display it had. Covered with fragrant spicy flowers for quite a few weeks. I did some light pruning to make way for all the new growth and buds but you don't have to do this. They clean themselves. I have some rather vigorous, large canes shooting skyward at this point and will be covered in flowers before long. As an added bonus, a clematis has wound its way into these shrubs to great effect. This shrub still displays admirable disease resistance. If I spray at all, it's rather lightly, if I have any product left. But it doesn't need it. Blackspot hasn't affected it yet and we're on the second year in my yard.

Sorry for the late reply. Here it is June 2011. My three CD's threw up many 5' canes. I pruned it pretty severely early this spring. It's already probably 3-4' tall and forming flower buds now in CT Z6. This year I'm going to cut it down much further after the first flush and see how it responds. I put three around a lampost that is now engulfed by a dark purple clematic. They are really too big for the space. I'd like to keep them as shrubs as opposed to climbers.

As an update to my first post in July.... Cape Diamond performed just as well as I ever hoped it would. It almost continually bloomed. I can't remember when there wasn't a bloom on these roses all summer and fall. It is the beginning of November and even here in CT there are still some flowers clinging to the newest canes of this plant and buds still forming. It threw out some longer thick canes into the Fall that I had to tie to a metal support that's meant for a clematis that I have growing up through the center of the Cape Diamonds. I'm still hoping for a little more vertical growth next year but I think it is going to be more of a lower wider grower. Again, time will tell.

I bought Cape Diamond this year after reading how disease resistant it was and I loved the clusters of pink flowers. I planted three bareroot plants this Spring (2009) around my lamp post. They have weathered our incredibly rainy Spring and Summer here in Southern New England with no trouble at all. There is virtually no black spot at all. Perhaps only on the lower interior leaves but it is insignificant. Once the sun finally decided to make a return in late June, it has been growing like crazy. This being it's first season in my yard, I am finding it has more of a horizontal spreading habit than vertical although this could change completely next year. Time will tell. For now I'm enjoying the clusters of 5 or more roses at the end of the canes, the medium pink blooms with yellow centers, and the wonderful spicy fragrance.

I have fertilized once a month, May June & July, and I have sprayed with Bayer Disease Control a couple times. Based on their initial growth I think I planted them too close together (3') apart. I'll know better this time next year.
