Origin:

Discovered by Père Jean Marie Delavay (France, 1884).
Introduced in France by Victor Lemoine & fils in 1902 as 'P. lutea Franch. synonym'.

Bloom:

Lemon-yellow. Moderate, lemon fragrance. Average diameter 2.5". Small, single bloom form.

Habit:

Height: 3' to 6' (90 to 185cm). Width: 5' (150cm).

USDA zone 6b through 9b (default).

Notes:

P. delavayi var. delavayi f. lutea (Delavay ex Franch.) S.G.Haw (2001)
P. ludlowii has mostly single carpels, while P. delavayi var. lutea has usually 2-4.

Father Delavay sent in 1886 seeds collected in Yunnan to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. These were sown in 1887 and of the three plants which grew, the first flowered in 1891. The first plants grown in Europe are therefore seedlings of the species.

According to most recent taxonomy, the earlier P. delavayi and P. lutea are combined into the same species P. delavayi. In order to aid in this transition, the references on the yellow-blooming form of the species is shown here, while those on the species as well as the red-blooming form of the species are combined and shown under P. delavayi. The dwarf forms can be found under P. delavayi var. angustiloba.
