Origin of the Large-Flowered Clematis
Clematis Viticella grows wild from southern Europe to Persia.  It is found in blue, purple, and rosy colors and has four "petals", in the language of common speech, but according to botanical theory, these are sepals as is often the case in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceæ.)...

Translation:
The Viticella group is a large species that flowers in summer and autumn, from July until October. The flowers are mounted successively and in masses on the new wood, which is why it is better to train them on a fairly small trellis. In the case where we want to obtain flowers lower down, we cut the plants at a height of two feet, but to cover higher surfaces we must adopt the plan recommended for Jackmani, that is to say obtain a series of main shoots, and prune the annual shoot each season.

CLEMATIS. Virgin's Bower.  Waldrebe, Ger. Clematite, Fr.
The Clematis are elegant, slender branched shrubs, of rapid growth, handsome foliage and beautiful large flowers of all colors.  The newer varieties introduced within the last five or six years are great acquisitions.  Either in the open ground as pillar plants, bedding plants, single plants in masses or about rock-work, or cultivated in pots or tubs, the Clematis cannot be excelled.
We append the following from the English "Gardener." Jackman's Clematises: "They are magnificent; and more than this, they do give us some of the grandest things in the way of creepers the horticultural world has ever seen, making glorious ornaments either for walls, verandahs, or rustic poles or pillars, varying in color from deep rich violet hue to dark velvety maroon, and in the newer seedling forms, beautiful shades of pale bright blue."
They will stand the severest Winters if the roots are slightly covered.

C. VITICELLA, Linnæus. - A South European climber, growing from eight to twelve feet high, furnished with ternately decomposed leaves, the lobes or leaflets of which are entire; and bearing moderately large drooping flowers, which are bluish , purple, or rose-coloured . As an ornamental plant, it is quite superseded by the varieties which have been obtained in gardens. This species, which is familiarly called Vine Bower, is figured in the Botanical Magazine (t. 565) , and another very fine figure occurs in the Flora Græca (t. 516) .
