Rosa rubrifolia, Copper Rose
Shrub rose
This tall shrub rose (6 ft.) is first distinguished by the elegant growth of its handsome, red-brown foliage with a bluish sheen. After the dark pink flowers have withered, it is then covered with round glossy red hips. It is perhaps our most beautiful shrub rose, even in winter, when the fine, reddish branches and numerous pendant hips are seen against a background of freshly fallen snow.

In "Central Canadian Rose-Breeding" Isabella Preston says,

R. rubrifolia X Ross Rose was made successfully, and the seedlings have reddish foliage similar to the female parent. The flowers have a few extra petals, but the plants are not attractive, and are mentioned only for the purpose of recording the cross.

Book  (Jul 1938)  Page(s) 87.

R. rubrifolia, Purpleleaf Rose, Redleaf Rose. - (Rubrifolia means redleaved). Notable for the bronze-color of its stems and leaves. Flowers single, pink, inconspicuous. Fruit red. A specimen planted near a background of spruce at Olds has been very attractive in winter due to a mass of red berries. At Beaverlodge, though only semi-hardy, it is making a fair dwarf hedge; it is pruned back to the winter-killing mark in spring. Inclined to make a late growth in a wet fall and kill severely at Edmonton.
