.....Accordingly I trusted 'Ann Elizabeth' to make good use of 'Allgold's' pollen;  'Ann Elizabeth' was a free growing pink Floribunda from Albert Norman, introduced in 1962. I selected a light yellow seedling, and from the cross (' Ann Elizabeth' x 'Allgold') x 'Yellow Cushion' came the kind of rose for which I was looking: flowers in the apricot to orange range, flushed scarlet, and leaves of remarkable health and fine appearance. Fortunately there was the added bonus of scent, which if not strong is certainly pleasant.  'Southampton' is a splendid garden rose. Its flowers open semi-double from a pretty Hybrid Tea bud;  and I notice they stand both the sun and the rain, which should make  every year a good year for 'Southampton'. It was  named after that famous English city, after the Mayor had visited our nursery to approve the choice.  I chose it for them, well knowing they had a reliable and healthy rose.  It was introduced in 1972; and I shall be much surprised if it does not prove an important parent

Southampton, Fl. (Harkness, 1972). [('Ann Elizabeth x 'Allgold') x 'Yellow Cushion']. A deep salmon-pink to apricot-orange semi-double rose with 20 petals. The colour resembles that of 'Sir Lancelot' but this is the better of the two, especially in that it fades far less readily. Excellent resistance to disease and weather. Type B (three to seven flowers in each panicle).
