Swan Lake Clg. HT. (McGredy, 1968). 'Memoriam' x 'Heidelberg'. I admired this pillar rose in England in 1963 (before it was named), 1968, 1973 and 1976 but have had difficulty in importing it. So far my plant has grown well but as is common in climbers, it has not bloomed in its first year. As seen in England the blooms are white except for a faint pink flush in the centre. About 50 petals and often up to show standard.

Leonard Hollis. Symposium on the Twelve Best Recurrent Climbing Roses.
'Swan Lake' (8 votes): McGredy, 1968. 'Memoriam' x 'Heidelberg'. White, tinged pink in the heart. The flowers are large, very full, shapely and borne singly and in small clusters with great freedom and recurrence. Mr Rice thinks the flowers are reminiscent of 'Memoriam', but notes that it does not shatter. Mr Pawsey comments that it stands bad weather exceptionally well, whereas Mr Fairbrother's experience is that it does not stand up to heavy rain well. Mrs Wheatcroft notes that it is late coming into flower and repeats after a longish interval, but that it opens well in all weathers. Mr Le Grice points out that it is a little messy viewed closely, but produces a good massed effect. Growth is vigorous to 8 ft with strong canes, clothed with semi-glossy, medium green foliage. Mr Rice notes that growth is very thorny. Mr Le Grice considers it of medium height and Mrs Wheatcroft describes it as a medium tall grower. Mr Pawsey comments that there is a tendency to mildew in the autumn, but Mr Fairbrother finds that a spray early in the season is sufficient to keep the foliage clean.

'Swan Lake' 10 reports; 3 years; N.R.S. rating 8.3. Christchurch: Lovely ornamental climber which has good habit and form. Tolaga Bay: Delicate reflexed bloom, really charming. Aptly named, a real gem. Wanganui: Needs some shade and planted on its side, Scottish fashion, just leaps away.
