Excerpts from Billy Teabag's comments under 'Other' August 23, 201:
This foundling is definitely not the original 'Souvenir d'un Ami'…..
I do not think there is sufficient evidence to support the 'General Tartas' identification…..
At the moment, HMF presents ‘General Tartas’ as the correct identity of this rose. If I add another version of this foundling to the ‘General Tartas’ entry, it implies acceptance of ‘General Tartas’ as the correct identity. However the rose has no direct link to this name in any part of the world and to date no detailed botanical descriptions of ‘General Tartas’ have been found on which to base a sound identification.
Early references to ‘General Tartas’ are short and not particularly specific, mostly briefly describing colour. Considered together, they suggest a rose that can come in a wide range of colours and could describe any one of several hundred variable Tea roses. To date, no early descriptions of ‘General Tartas’ mention any of the rather distinctive features of this foundling rose – eg the up-turned leaflets, the unusual-shaped hips, the distinctive purplish colour on the undersides of the leaflets that can be seen at certain times, and the wide variation in bloom form from season to season….. I think it would be wiser for ‘General Tartas’ to be considered a speculative suggestion awaiting more research rather than a confirmed identity for this rose.
