Species / Wild.  

White.  Moderate fragrance.  Small to medium, single (4-8 petals) bloom form.  Prolific, occasional repeat later in the season.  Small buds.  

Medium, armed with thorns / prickles, suckers on its own roots, upright.  Small, fragrant foliage.  9 to 13 leaflets.  

Height: up to 5' (up to 150cm).  

Can be used for specimen.  Disease susceptibility: very mildew resistant, very rust resistant.  

Gizi's Rose is an open pollinated seedling of R. primula (from Pickering Nurseries). Six seeds were sown in November 2014 from one hip collected from R. primula earlier in 2014. Five seeds germinated. Gizi's Rose was one of two which flowered in 2016--both had white flowers. Gizi's Rose is named after one of my Hungarian Kuvasz (a white wavy-haired dog breed), Feher Morcos Bestia whose call name is Gizi. Gizi is particularly fond of eating rose hips.

Since Gizi's Rose is an open pollinated seedling of R. primula, I do not know the pollen parent. Could be a self, or one of the multiple species roses nearby. Since the flowers are white, that is a consideration. The closest roses to R. primula, within touching distance of the canes, are R. fedschenkoana and R. glabrifolia. Also very close are R. borissovae (which produces both pink and white flowers of different sizes on the same plant) and R. xanthina. A little further away to R. spinosissima. The bees are very fond of all these species and can be seen darting among the plants. R. primula, in my garden is a prolific producer of hips with lots of seeds. However, these hips and those of xanthina are among the most eaten by squirrels, so if I want any, I have to be quick about harvesting. Another note about Gizi's Rose is the foliage fragrance is overpowering the scent of the flowers, so I can't really tell what that scent is or how much of it there is. Of the five seedlings of R. primula I have, Gizi's Rose has the most fragrant foliage.
