Named for a river in northeastern Italy. The phrase 'crossing the Rubicon' meaning committing oneself irrevocably, derives from Roman history: in 49 BCE, Julius Caesar provoked a Civil War after he crossed the river with a legion of troops as part of a successful but illegal power grab.
