Deadheading  glossary photo courtesy of member Cass

Bud eyes, shown with arrows, are immediately below the blooms and well above any leaves. Once again old garden roses defy conventional rose care "advice." Deadheading this rose to an out-facing bud eye would be a terrible waste of vigor, especially since this variety is perfectly remontant without any deadheading at all and remains a nice, bushy plant throughout a long growing season.
To deadhead this rose, simply snap off the hip close to top arrow, being careful not to damage the new growth.
