My husband put in this raised bed in 2006 intended it to be a perennial garden. This garden was just a small part of his landscaping design for our yard, which had been nothing but wild flowers, brush, trees, and an old barn foundation. He was looking for a low maintenance garden plan, but while he wasn't looking, I fed my rose obsession. This area originally had a rose bush that I planted in 1999 when I bought the house. It survived neglect and injury I could not control. In 2006 we tried to lift it into the raised bed, and failed. In 2007 I bought a new rose and planted 3 more to keep the first one company. 2008 brought one more. But since it was never intended to be a rose garden, I'm still working on adding more rose bushes to my yard.
