[From A Book of Gardening: Idea, Designs, Methods, by Penelope Hobhouse, p. 132:] An Edwardian rose garden at Shugborough matches the period of the terraces... [p. 147:] a rose garden was constructed by the National Trust in 1966, just below the main terrace west of the house. A Victorian design includes roses swinging as garlands on ropes between pillars, trellis-work archs and pyramids for roses and clematis. The period flower-colouring is in a range from white, pink purple to dark red, but does not include any flowers with a more modern 'salmon-pink' tint. At first only roses which were available at the end of the nineteenth century were used, but more recently, to get better performance in this cold soil and poor site, healthier bushes and modern roses with a longer flowering period have been added to the scheme... Blue clematis flower on arches above a bed of the modern Floribunda rose 'Olive' (1982) with flowers of ox-blood red.
