John Horace McFarland (September 24, 1859 - October 2, 1948)

Mac Farland Co, s'est éteint le samedi 2 octobre dernier, dans une clinique où il avait été transporté quelques jours auparavant. Il avait célébré son 89e anniversaire le 24 septembre, au milieu de ses collaborateurs. Sa santé s'était brusquement affaiblie dans la semaine qui a précédé sa mort.

was president of the [
American Rose Society] from 1930-1932... he published the first
American Rose Annual in 1916 and served as editor of the prestigious yearbook for nearly thirty years...McFarland was a man of unlimited interests and the energy with which to pursue them. A printer by trade -- he owned and operated the Mount Pleasant Press in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania -- he was also a horticulturalist and an accomplished photographer who developed the art of color photography in this country. He combined all these talents by specializing in the printting of colored garden catalogues.
Breeze Hill, his garden in Harrisburg, became famous because he used photographs of his own plants as the illustrations in these publications... Of the numerous books he wrote on gardening, four were about roses...
