From the preface: "The botanists of the last century who received exotic collections of plants did not pay much attention to the localities, collectors or dates of their specimens....The original letters of the collectors, which no doubt, accompanies the collections, were not preserved, and the original labels written by the collectors are generally not found....Besides giving a survey of botanical travels performede in China and botanical colletions made in that Empire, we wish also to record in this work the services rendered by professional botanists and other promoters of botanical science, who, although they had never been in China, have contributed to our knolwdge of the vegetable productions of that country...The scope of our investigations in not confined to China Proper but it comprehends also besides Manchuria, the vast territories of Mongolia, Eastern Turkestan, Tibet, etc., the so called "Vassal States"....
