... Why have I omitted 'Chaplin's Pink Climber' and 'American Pillar' from the following list? Because they are blatant, almost scentless, and would not be included in my own garden, however large, mainly owing to their growth and size of flower.

Dorothy Perkins and its clan are included to complete the historical picture, although to see an arbour or pergola covered entirely with roses of this popular class is to realize that even these soulless, scentless roses must be given their due, and can look right in the right surroundings.

The Barbier firm produced 'Albéric Barbier', 'Paul Transon', 'René André', 'Léontine Gervais', 'François Juranville', 'Alexandre Girault', and 'Auguste Gervais', in that order from 1900 to 1908, and the species used was R. luciae, which is sometimes considered a form of R. wichuraiana, or vice versa.

'Gardenia'. Manda, 1899. R. wichuraiana X 'Perle des Jardins', a yellow Tea Rose. Similar to 'Albéric Barbier' with small dark green glossy leaves. The flowers are very double, quartered, rather cupped, of creamy white deepening to yolk-yellow in the centre, fading to nearly white in hot sun. True apple scent. 18 feet.
