Roses of America is the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's guide to our national flower. It is based on the expertise of the staff of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and draws on the resources of the Cranford Rose Garden. This book is geared specifically to North America. Over two hundred varieties that will do well in North America's climates are presented, with loads of information on how to care for them. The how-to section is illustrated with step-by-step pictures that are useful to the beginner as well as the more advanced gardener. We recommend this book very highly. It was written by Stephen Scanniello and Tania Bayard. Stephen was Rosarian of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden at the time and the information in the book is based on his own first hand experiences working with the roses in that garden. Tania is, among other things, a horticulturalist who specializes in the history of plants and gardens, and, in addition to practical rose-growing considerations, she brings a well-rounded historical perspective to roses. It's fascinating stuff! Although the book is no longer in print, you can obtain a copy from used booksellers, like www.alibris.com -- where I got my copy! -- and if you're serious about your roses, I would highly recommend that you do so.
