Louis Smirnow owned a peony nursery on Long Island, New York.
[From The Book of Tree Peonies, by Gian Lupo Osti, p. 10:] almost all of his seedlings had come from Japan
[From "Leisure; Tree Peonies can be a boon to the Lazy Gardener", by Joanna May Thach, "The New York Times", September 26, 1982:] ..the port of Odessa, from where Mr. Smirnow emigrated to this country in 1902 as a child of six....[His] Devotion to the tree peony began as a Chance Encounter in 1931...In 1979 and 1980, Mr. Smirnow made several investigative trips to China in search of these rare plants. He finally persuaded Chinese authorities to grant him sole importation rights. Included in the group of 34 varieties are three light blue doubles - Blue Moon, Blue Joy and Heavenly Blue - and the pale green Imperial Green and Green Glory of China.
