Gilbert Nabonnand was born in 1828 (not 1829) and died in 1903. After 1864 he assumed the christian name Philibert (Ph.) on his catalogues.

[From Rosenjahrbuch 1883, by Friedrich Schneider, 1883, p. 235:] From all breeders Nabonnand has again been the worst, I fight wherever and whenever I can against the mass producer of seedlings, until german rose lovers spurn his roses or he stops cheating.

[From Revue horticole, August 1890, p. 361:] Ordre du Mérite agricole. Ont été promus ou nommés dans l'ordre du Mérite agricole : Au grade d'officier : M. Nabonnand (Philibert), horticulteur au golfe Juan (Alpes-Maritimes). A contribué à l'embellissement et au développement de l'horticulture florale de la région. Chevalier du 23 juin 1887.

[From Rosen-Zeitung 1897, p. 110:] Gilbert Nabonnand was born in Grezolles near Roanne (Loire) on 20. May 1829. He worked in the fields and in agriculture until he was 16, and then entered into an apprenticeship at a tree nursery in Vienne....With 20 he then went to the rose breeder Guillot and then to Boucharlat, where he completed his apprenticeship. In 1854 he established a Business in Sorgues (Vaucluse) and started to grow fruit trees, Evergreen plants and flowers, in 1858 he moved the Business to Avignon and added roses to his cultures....A travel to the coast of the Mediterranean delighted him so much...that he moved there in 1864....Up to now he has obtained 160 sorts from seed; almost all are chance seedlings.

1908. Il débuta chez un horticulteur à Vienne, fit un séjour chez Guillot, à Lyon et dans différents Etablissements, s'établit ensuite à Sorgues (Vaucluse) et, eu 1858, à Avignon, où il se spécialisa dans la culture des rosiers. En 1864, Lord Brougham and Vaux l'ayant fait venir sur la Côte-d'Azur, il créa au Golfe-Juan un établissement horticole qui ne tarda pas à
prendre un très grand développement.

[From L'homme des roses de Golfe Juan, by Patrick Mioulane, 2015:] Le 20 mai 1828 naissait à Grezolles dans la Loire, non loin de Roanne, Gilbert (Philibert) Nabonnand, horticulteur et rosiériste français, mort le 06 janvier 1903 à Golfe Juan (Alpes-Maritimes). Ayant, dès l’âge de 16 ans, appris les bases de son métier chez les grands rosiéristes Lyonnais de l’époque, dont Jean-Baptiste Guillot père (1803-1882), Gilbert Nabonnand s’installa à Sorgues dans la région d’Avignon pour développer une pépinière généraliste. Après son mariage le 12 août 1857 avec Thérèse Bertaud, dont il eut trois enfants entre 1858 et 1864, Gilbert Nabonnand, qui se faisait appeler Philibert, déménagea sur la Côte d’Azur pour se consacrer à la création du jardin de Lord Henry Brougham (1778-1868) pour lequel il travaillait déjà depuis 1855. Cette propriété cannoise de la Croix-des-Gardes appelée : la villa Eleonore Louise était entourée d’un très grand parc dont il ne subsiste plus aujourd’hui que des vestiges du concept originel. Introduit dans la haute société de la Riviera, Gilbert Nabonnand créa à Golfe-Juan en 1864 « Les Roses de Golfe-Juan », qui proposait aussi des palmiers, des Protéacées, des Myrtacées (Eucalyptus) et des arbres fruitiers exotiques.....Parallèlement à son activité de paysagiste, Gilbert Nabonnand se consacra entre 1872 et 1903, à l’hybridation des rosiers, principalement des rosiers Thés (70 créations) et des rosiers Noisette. En 1883, il proposait un catalogue de près de 900 variétés d’origines diverses.
