[From Climbing Roses, by Stephen Scanniello and Tania Bayard, p. 73: 'Crimson Rambler'] was brought to the United States [in 1895] by the firm of Ellwanger and Barry in Rochester, New York.
[From Roses of America, by Stephen Scanniello and Tania Bayard, p. 17:] In 1882, H.B. Ellwanger published The Rose, a book that soon set the standard for rose classification. Ellwanger, proprietor of the Mount Hope Nursery in Rochester, New York, described and evaluated nearly a thousand varieties of roses in his book, but he complained that many of them were European imports unsuitable for cultivation in America... [Ellwanger] attempted to develop roses that would grow well in the United States, using native wild roses as the stock.
