The two languishing New Dawns on either side of my large arbor met the shovel on Tuesday. I thought to save what I could, then thought again...into the dumpster they went. I will have to ponder what to put there. Francois Juransville is the toughest rambler I have every seen, but may be too much for this spot. Maybe Mme. Alfred Carriere, but I have two others already in the back yard.
Hot again on Wednesday, this time up to 103. The saving grace was the wind was only a light breeze and damage to new growth was minimal. Springs blooms look crispy. But most balled anyway this spring. Souvenir de la Malmaison looked frightful with all blooms looking like browned wads of tissue lingering. Ugh! I am losing my love for this rose. Singles to semi-doubles are much more reliable and long lasting. Souvenir de St. Anne's was never more lovely. Good news for the forecast here. La Nina is bidding a fond farewell. And El Nino is taking over, good for Texas hopefully. SUPPOSED to be hot early on, then cooler as summer progresses. I hope! Looking at my roses...Not a good spring bloom, so much balling. Also, many of my once bloomers did not do much. I attribute this to the damage done by summer 2011 plus not much winter chill. As soon as they finish what blooming they are going to do, I am going for some hard pruning for these guy. Maybe this will rejuvenate them.
The shade went up again today. Hardily reinforced, is not going anywhere this time.
Well, the wind took my 30' x 30' shade structure down. Tomorrow will consist of a putting up a new support system-or not. I stepped wrong on my right foot and I think it may be broken. Not a great thing to happen in the busiest time of year. The roses will carry on one way or another. I admire their resiliency more every day.
