My Escapade isn't working out. Bought in 2008 and planted next to a Bingo which. The Bingo flourished and E. got blackspot... so in the spring of 2010 I moved it to a better spot. It just kind of refuses to really grow and flourish. It flowers with one or two blooms twice in summer - black spot is gone but it doesn't do well at all. Now I wonder if the place is wrong, if it was just bad plant, if I should replace it and try Escapade again or just get something else....
Planted spring '08: From 09 on the first buds are eaten up from the inside by something???? - can't get at them before they ruin the buds - then the new buds grow and they are ok. Thus it starts blooming late - but mine is true to it's reputation as an october bloomer! It is rich and healthy (except for the "bud bugs"). I save the old flower petals which don't loose their fragrance with drying, for potpourri or for rose tea ( together with Vervaine is a wonderful tea)
I call this my "Little Prince" rose. Definitely a "she"! First one red leaf after the other - carefully unfolding - slowly turning a beautiful dark green. She takes her time as a bud - grooming herself to perfection before "going public" - The first year - the plant had only one cane and she bloomed with one rose. (summer 2010) The bud took ages before slowly and tantalizingly opening - kept us watching and hoping every day. And she was beautiful!. 2011 - bloomed (one at a time.... so each could be admired - she remains vain) throughout the summer and didn't succumb to the BS of her neighbors. 2012 - Has come through (two strong canes) a heavy late frost and promises to remain healthy. Can't really say "she blooms her head off" but she bloomed more often this year... so I guess she just needs time to grow.
Planted in march '08 - very small - but bloomed profusely Now - april '12 - is about 1 x 1 m with many arching canes - red brown to dark brow - with large red-brown thorns on the mature canes - It came through a severe feb. freeze periode ( - 15 C) after a too warm dec-jan. much better than most other of my roses. looking at pictures of other canary birds - I'm not sure how this one should be termed. The blooms are spaced closely and evenly along the stem - I have't yet had hips which don't fall off.
