I have been doing my own landscaping and gardening since we first built a house in 1989. I started with mostly perennials in my flower gardens and a small rose garden. When we moved 8 years later I doubled the size of my rose garden and had even more perennial gardens. In 2002 we moved to Ohio, where I currently live, and ripped out half the shrubs and replaced them with perennial gardens. I now have gardens completely surrounding my house except for the doorways. Within those gardens and a large formal rose garden and smaller garden of antique roses, I grow over 90 rose bushes. i currently grow two in pots on my patio (I winter them over by wrapping them with their own Goodwill comforters and a mound of mulch on top of the pot - yes my friends laugh at me but it works!). I try to grow organically and also take advantage of the free compost our city offers, in addition to that I create with our own compost bin. I use soaker hoses for watering, and the modified Cornell horticultural spray weekly for fungi and most bugs (I hand-pick the Japanese beetles & dunk in a bucket of soapy water). I have predominantly English roses and a good concentration of minis, along with selected floribundas, hybrid teas and recently, antique roses.
