I have tried for the past week to upload a list of the roses I have in the garden but for some reason I cannot. Is there something wrong with the site?

The support department received your file - thank you. Turns out this is a simple problem to solve.

HMF can only handle simple text and csv file types. The file you sent is a "wps" file which is proprietary format generated using Microsoft Works. It contains all sorts of formatting information along with the text and this confuses the HMF software. The same happens if you try to upload a Microsoft "doc" file.

To be able to process these alternate file types would require software on HMF capable of reading each of the proprietary formats and extracting the relevant text after stripping away the formatting information. As there are many different proprietary formats out there - some more popular than others - this would be a major undertaking so instead we require you send a simple text file.

All text processing software can generate this file type using the "Save As" option. Choose the option to save the file as a "text" file and it will generate a simple text file devoid of all proprietary formatting software - perfect for HMF.

Please give it a try and let us know how you make out. We stand ready to help in any way.

Hello,

I came across your list of roses and I love it. I am new to planting roses but I already fell in love with a few roses that I have a hard time finding such as St. Cecilia and Geoff Hamilton... also Wedding Cake. I can't find them on the market. Do you have an idea of where I can look or if you would be willing to sell me a rose in case you have an extra spare root?

Thank you,

The plant list upload process works properly for us so we need the actual file you attempted to upload to be able to exactly replicate the problem you're having.

If you would be so kind, please email us at the email address found on our "Contact Us" page and attach your original (unsuccessful) rose name file.

We will process your file in house while we watch for problems. Thanks so much for taking the time to help us resolve this.

It looks like we jumped to an erroneous conclusion about your plant name file. Yes, it did need to be saved as a "text" file but that is not what was causing your problem.

It turns out our software was not issuing the appropriate instructional message about your needing to create a member garden listing before you can build a plant list. The create member garden listing is separate (additional step) from creating your HMF membership account because some members choose to not list their garden on HMF.

You should be all set now using the text file you sent us. We appreciate your patience and helping us resolve this issue. Please let us know how you make out.

Thanks again.

How have you made out uploading your plant list - it should be straight forward now and given the number of plants your have, a pleasure to have them all listed within a matter of minutes. We hope to hear from you again.

Leonard I think this is about as impressive a list of roses as I have seen anyone have. I have seen larger etc...but I think the diversity of roses you list is divine. I would love to see your roses in bloom to see the different roses you have. I grow 300+ and my diversity pales compared to yours. I think you have more guts than I. I tend to stick to the modern HT, GR, FL, Mini/Mini-FL and that's about it. I don't know enough about the old roses to know what to get, and I have unfortunately had nothing but problems trying to grow the Austin roses in my northwest Missouri zone 5/6 location. My hat is off to you. By the way, could you comment on the rose Solarflash/Solarflare an orange blend HT from a handful of years ago?? It is now offered by Palatine and I love the orange and apricot blends.
Regards and good gardening---

I am not familiar with Solarflash/Solarflare. I planted it last spring and I try (is anyone really successful) to nip off buds the first year. Next year it should give some indication of what it will be like. You can probably we are in love with roses and are still adding to our collection.

Now regarding your climate zone. Most of the OGR other than teas and chinas would do well where you live. In particular gallicas which require very little effort to grow. Cuttings from most varieties grow easily from cuttings. Particularly Tuscany and Superb Tuscany. If you would like to exchange cuttings I could send you 2 each of 10-12 varieties from my garden and you could send me the same from your garden. I would include both OGR and HT/Floribundas. Probably 1/3 to 1/2 the roses on my list are at a stage where cuttings could be profitably taken. Let me know if you are interested.

If you are ever in Stanwood please feel free to visit out garden.

Hey Leondard why don't you e-mail me at jojomood@sbcglobal.net and we can communicate easier than having to go through this HMF website. It would be better for them and us both I think.
I look forward to hearing from you.

It looks to have a strong species connection. I'm surprised it's remontant. It reminds me of the Scots roses.

It looks rather like "canary bird" to me, but I don't recall ever seeing this in the flesh, so my impression is based solely on pictures of this rose.

The color seems a bit light for 'Canary Bird'. especially in that climate. It likely has a xanthina/hugonis connection. Why it repeats is the question.

The Vintage Gardens Book of Roses has 2 1/2 pages of hybrid spinossimas. The description of 'Wildenfels Gelb', might match what you have.

It looks a lot like 'Butterball' or something similar.

Are there thorns under the leaves? R. hugonis has none there.
Vintage's 2006 catalogue, p322 carried R. hugonis.

The color of the flowers on Prairie Peace were much, much better this year than last year. They were a true apricot.
