I am a big fan of roses that exhibit fine fragrance and disease resistance as well as decorative qualities beyond petal alone. Henry Hudson encompasses all of these qualities in a compact plant that repeats throughout the season. The spring show is quite amazing, especially as the shrub is loaded with plump, handsome buds that are pink before opening to a fleshy white. We have H.H. planted right next to Harison's Yellow and together with other Rugosas, this is quite the show!

Rosa hugonis is first to bloom in our Zone 7b collection, always in competition with what we have labeled as Rosa carolina. Father Hugo, in the fashion of the pimps or spinosissimas, is a once bloomer but I prize this rose for its healthy foliage, graceful habit, and decorative thorns as well as the cheerful harbinger of spring. Fairly shade tolerant as well, and suckers to form understory specimens in our border. Blooms fade from rich golden yellow to softer butter.

A most delightful spring once bloomer, there is much charm to be found in this plant. Our specimen is a rather large 7-8 ft in the shade, becoming extremely lax with the weight of bud. And what buds! Handsome striped ones plumping up for display of double creamy white blooms. The bloom centers are not bashful and open wide to a sweet extra point of interest. The foliage is healthy and decorative, as well as the striking fruit. An all-season shrub!

What a tough Lady! She has been growing in our collection in the shade of a huge Wisteria specimen with whom she also fights for root space. 4'x3' Yankee Lady has persevered however and provides non-stop spicy fragrance all summer into autumn. Her giant mid-summer blooms are blowsy, tousled, and last only a day in the high heat but she is worth her short-lived enjoyment!
