So much hype has been made about the unusual coloring of this one, but for me it’s a rather ordinary reddish-pink, indistinguishable from the ubiquitous Double Knock Out. Like many Knock Outs and all plastic plants, Benjamin Britten also has no discernable scent. There the similarity ends, since Knock Out spends its energy producing flowers, while Benjamin only makes octopus canes. It produces many blind basal breaks, which if trained horizontally, will in turn produce a prodigious number of blind laterals. Perhaps it was named for the wrong historical figure…Benjamin Britten is not known for ‘blind leading the blind’, that would be Helen Keller.

Must be a personal sensitivity issue. My Benjamin Britten has a strong, fruity scent; much, much stronger than the very slight fragrance of Double Knockout. Nor is the colour similar. It could be due to your location in Texas being unsuitable for the variety. Here in Southern Michigan the blooms are an exquisite glowing orangish red fading to a vibrant watermelon pink.

Our plant is much like yours. We are in the Eastern Bay Area of California. Our plant is potted, and grows to about 5 or so feet tall, beautifully rounded and had huge flushes of fragrant flowers which are colored as you describe it. We love it. Ben from Texas must have a different nondescript rose of unknown origin. Simply sounds far too off the mark for this beauty!

Jackson & Perkins site says it has a strong pear fragrance. Your post says none to mild. I'd like to hear from growers for their comment on the aroma.

In this case, the information on the rose page came from the registration material submitted by J & P to the ARS.

Mine just started blooming and I would categorize the fragrance as a medium, delicious fruity scent. This is a gorgeous rose, starting out a deep orange and fading to salmon pink. The stems are strong enough to hold the large blooms upright. In our garden showing incredible disease resistance!

Our Sedona has a wonderfully rich fruity fragrance. It is also one of the most beautiful flowers of all the plants in our rose collection. Healthy, vigorous, and generous with huge, long lasting blooms. We're going to get another next spring. Wonderful!

We had one Georgia rose bush when we lived in Stockton CA. It was planted with a southern exposure in full sun, and did marvelously well. Gigantic and beautiful blooms on a 6 foot tall bush. Flowers were actually much more than "mildly" fragrant. We found them in color and fragrance to be similar to "Abraham Darby", but definitely a HT form. The one negative, and a big one, is the thorns. I've NEVER seen anything like them! Huge downward pointing hooks that were extremely thick on all canes, thiick or slender. A real danger to clothes and skin. Truly the most difficult thorns I have ever encountered, including Pink Grootendorst! Anyway, if you can find it (we cannot) and can possibly brave the thorns, this is a healthy, gorgeous rose in all other aspects.

We found Waihiki in a sales barrel as a "body bag" 1 1/2 grade at K-Mart. It is turning into a beautiful plant, and it has gorgeous, fragrant flowers. Had never heard of it prior to stumbling upon it as described above. So glad that we did. It has lovely foliage, too. It is starting to take off, and looks like it will be quite vigorous. Will keep all informed if interested.

How did it turn out? Did it stay vigorous? Being a K-Mart body bag, did it come true to variety?

It is doing terrific. When it bloomed the blossoms were exactly what we expected and lovely. This season, it is showing good vigor and beautiful, shiny maroon foliage. The leaves mature into a rich green which accent the blooms so well. If you can find it,give it a try.
