Le Nia Rias rose in front of red peony, that Centifolia rose sends suckers all over my lawn, even before forming buds.

Comte de Chambord - in commerce photos photo

Every bloom of Comte de Chambord is perfect, if given enough minerals and balanced ratio of fertilizer: I winterized Comte with alfalfa hay, NPK 2.7-1-2, plus sulfate of potash before blooming.

Own-root CPM blooming well in partial shade (less than 5 hours of sun). Early spring I pruned it down to way below my knee for the workers to fix my house, and CPM grew at least 10 new canes with lots of blooms. This rose is very vigorous and super-healthy in my rock-hard alkaline clay.

Crown Princess was stingy at 1st in my alkaline clay. Then I gave it sulfate of potash & gypsum, more blooms. In 3rd year, I gave it red-lava-rock for potassium, and it gave me 40+ blooms in spring flush. Very healthy plant in heavy alkaline clay, it gets less than 5 hours of sun.

Duchess as 3rd year own-root, clean & healthy & lots of blooms. Smell fantastic, just as good as comte de Chambord. Repeat well if I give it sulfate of potash & gypsum.

The 1st bloom is more than 4". The color doesn't fade, and last long in the vase. The scent is fruity yummy. Orange rose like this and Pat Austin are best in wet alkaline clay, in partial shade & higher demand for water. Bought as own-root from Roses Unlimited Summer 1/2 sale, 1st week of June. Comparing a few dark purple-y pink/red roses that hold their color well, even with lots of heat and sun. In all the photos the aging blooms are toward the back. Younger ones are toward the front, so you can see the amount of fading. It has been very hot here unfortunately, already over 100 for a few days recently. Left to right: Don Juan (it’s red, but it can be dark purple-y red sometimes), Polarnacht rhododendron (not a rose, but gorgeous), Souvenir du Docteur Jamain, Falstaff, Black Baccara, Young Lycidas, Yves Piaget, Pretty Lady Rose.
