My name is Gary Wootton, I am a retired Soldier, I served 30 years in the Defence Forces (ARMY), and upon my retirement, from the Army, I work for the Attorney Generals Department in the Supreme Court of New South Wales. I began growing roses for their readiness to be propagated. I joined the Rose Society of NSW and my local Rose Society Regional Branch the Nepean, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury (NBMH). I just wanted to grow the best roses that I capable of growing. I am not what you would class as a dedicated rose show person, although I do show my roses as a vehicle to gauge their performance.
My first introduction into rose breeding was at one of my local Rose Society Regional Meeting, where our Secretary, Glynis Hayne, gave an informative talk and demonstration on breeding roses from seed, she also gave those interested a few “White Spray” seeds. I was successful in having one of those seeds germinate and grow into a rose bush. (That same rose won First Place at the 2017 Nepean, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury NBMH Spring Show in the seedling division). I named that rose after my eldest granddaughter, my second eldest granddaughter then made a request for a rose named in her honour, and so the story starts.
I conveyed the above story to a fellow rosarian, and they suggested I simply call the rose “My Grandchildren”, now, were would the fun in that be!
Richard Walsh at Richard and Ruth’s Rose Breeding workshop, said that rose breeding was addictive, well Richard I will up the ante and say rose breeding is life consuming.
