Hello,

I have a rose which I've inherited from my grandmother, but neither of us knows the name of this rose. The original plant came from her neighbor in Harford Co., Maryland, USA, around 1950. The neighbor prized the rose because it matched her stable's colors in the Preakness. We transplanted the rose to my mother's house in Montgomery Co., Maryland. And now we've transplanted it again to my home in New Orleans. It seems to have acclimated well. Only blooms once a season, in the late spring. And it has a wonderful fragrance. The photos attached here are the rose as of today (4/8/14). Any clues would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Maureen

Hi Maureen!

I'd sure be interested to know as well, I believe I have one of these roses too. Also got it from my husband's grandmother's house. I know it is an old rose, she lived in that house for many, many years. I would like to ask, what is the diameter of the rose? Mine will fit in the palm of my hand when it is fully open.

I've had this rose in my garden for several years now, and it has become one of my favorites. The blooms last for at least a week before falling off, and tall upright strong stems. Deep dark red, beautifully formed buds, and can take the AZ desert heat. I love this rose! Not a lot of fragrance is it's only drawback.

I got this rose for my mother-in-law for Mother's Day, 2003. She is 88 years old and no longer able to garden, but she likes flowers. This is the first rose she ever had in her flower bed and it was spectacular. It took no care, and bloomed prolifically. I am going to add at least one to my own garden this spring. Her flower bed is on the south side of her house. There are trees in the area, but apparently it got the amount of sun it needed. I saw no disease on this rose all summer and fall. Here in central PA it reached 3' wide and 3' tall. A definite winner! Jane Master

I've had this rose in my garden for about 4 years now. Every year it gets better and better. It's a prolific bloomer, it would stop traffic if it could be seen from the road. By far one of my most favorite. No disease troubles so far and tolerates the southern AZ heat extremely well. It also tolerated several days where we did not get above freezing.
