When first introduced to England two hundred years ago -- though it is actually much older -- it was known as 'Cuisse de Nymphe': nymph's thigh. May ball in wet weather. There are said to be two clones -- 'Great Maiden's Blush' and 'Small Maiden's Blush' -- with little difference between them, except that perhaps in the latter case the flowers are fractionally smaller and the growth slightly shorter; but Beales says he has never seen this difference and prefers the simple name Maiden's Blush...

p111. Le Batiment. Thire Ste Hermine, France [garden]. ....not just climbers and ramblers, but several Gallicas which have grown very much taller than normal in this agreeable position. Among these I spotted the very ancient 'Hippolyte', a beautiful, graceful purple Gallica, and the similarly coloured 'Cardinal de Richelieu....

p31. Photo. The Damask roses as a group are among our oldest. Their ancestry is complex and some of them are not easy to classify; Ispahan, for instance, may well have a good many Alba genes in its makeup. The first damasks were brought back to Western Europe by the homecoming crusaders. This one, however, arrived much later; it was found growing in the area of Ispahan in Persia - now Iran - in 1832. Despite this late discovery and introduction, it probably dates back to ancient times. .... two and a half inches in diameter when fully open.....

James Mason Height and vigour from 'Scharlachglut' and texture of petals and scent from 'Tuscany Superb'. Apart from 'Scharlachglut', which was introduced in 1952, it is the only Gallica to be raised this century. [Note: John Scarman has classed a number of his introductions as Gallicas as well.]

p40 La Bonne Maison. Lyon, France. Under a series of arches along a twisty narrow path one is led towards a wrought-iron gate, barely visible among unruly roses while I was there. This is the entrance to Odile's romantic jardin secret - totally enclosed and festooned with all types of roses, in particular, the old-fashioned looking white hybrid Setigera, from 'Long John Silver'....

p117 Mills Avenue, Menlo Park, San Mateo, California, USA. 'Long John Silver', raised in 1935 in America, a vigorous climber with clusters of large, fully double, fragrant white flowers.

p198 [Photo] 'Long John Silver'. American through and through, this rose was bred by Horvath in 1934 during a period when, in search of hardiness and health, he used the American native species Rosa setigera and the Hybrid Tea 'Sunburst' to produce this distinctive climber with fully double, old-fashioned-looking scented flowers of pure white..... Quite apart from its beautiful flowers, 'Long John Silver's' other attributes include remontancy and lovely bright green foliage. It is vigorous, not over-thorny and seems not to be bothered by any diseases. it is probably best grown on a structure such as a pergola, arch or tripod, for its long, thick, arching branches are easily trained in all directions.

p205 Plumpton Place, Lewes, East Sussex, England. Among the more unusual roses used to provide height on the tripods are the white Setigera hybrid 'Long John Silver', a fascinating rose which..... should be more widely grown.
