Madame de Watteville rose photo
Rose photo courtesy of Margaret Furness
South Australia, zone 9, autumn. Potted plant. This occasional appearance may be why it was described as being like a tulip. As "Kombacy Marianne".

R. hirtula rose photo
Rose photo courtesy of Rosewild
Closeup showing hairs on the upper surface which separates this species of hirtula (and for which it’s named) from the Chinese form. [I see the hairs are not easily visible in these photos posted on HMF but my original high pixel photos distinctly showed them, sorry.]

R. hirtula rose photo
Rose photo courtesy of Rosewild
Rosa hirtula showing a leaflet on the left with 19! leaflets, possibly the most leaflets per leaf of any Rosa species in the world, and covered with hairs on the upper surface, too. My plant was given to me by Miriam Wilkins in 1984 but unfortunately I never learned her source. In 1983 it was reported the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard had a hirtula 10 inches [25.4 cm] in diameter but whether it still exists I would certainly like to know.
