Dr. A. S. Thomas. ……..’La France’. Unfortunately it proved to be sterile. Its twenty one chromosomes are not divisible by two, half going to each parent of each seedling. Such roses are called triploids. There are several other triploids, including ‘Lady Hillingdon and ‘Diamond Jubilee’. They too are regarded as sterile. Some hybridists claim that a few progeny have been raised from them. This has happened in mules (donkey x horse) and canary x finch and the liger (lion x tiger) and the tigron (tiger x lion) etc. but one needs to be cautious regarding any such claims. They are improbably but not impossible.

Isobel Coulston, Gisborne Rose Society. ….’Diamond Jubilee’ (Boerner 1947) 3m high with the crown 56cm across. Its pinky-buff colour has not been duplicated and many a modern cultivar would stay in commerce longer if it had the substance of its petals. The high centred form is there, the keeping qualities when picked and staged, the perfume, the remontancy, the foliage, the long stems, the basal shoots – need I go on?

Ian R. Spriggs, Victoria. It has been said that ‘Diamond Jubilee’ will not set seed. This statement is incorrect, although it is difficult to set seed on this variety. Gene Boerner raised ‘Polynesian Sunset’ from a cross (‘Diamond Jubilee’ x ‘Hawaii’) in 1965. The above hybridiser also raised ‘Diamond Jubilee’.

Dr. A. S. Thomas. ….’Lady Hillingdon’ and ‘Diamond Jubilee’ are triploids and hence there is no progeny.
