Old Homestead Roses
Mrs. G. T. Drennan
For instance, Isabella Sprunt is but semi-double when full blown. The buds are beautiful canary yellow, of moderate dimensions, and very well formed. Over and above all, it is a winter-blooming rose. In that respect it has no equal among the roses I know, and their name is legion. Time was, that La Pactole was thought to bloom in winter as freely as Isabella Sprunt, but nobody thinks so now. It is the only ever-blooming rose that I would recommend to amateurs for forcing. It will bloom in a temperature of 70 degrees. As a rule, amateurs had better fill their windows and hot houses with any other plants than roses. They are difficult winter bloomers except for florists, or amateurs able to employ skillful gardeners, and to have regular rose houses.

"The Queen of Flowers" By Edwin Lonsdale
Some of the old favorites of a quarter of a century ago have been revived again, especially to be be used for society "Buds,” or debutantes' bouquets, as Bon Silene, Papa Gontier, Safrano and Isabella Sprunt. “Sprunt” is a yellow sport from the tawny Safrano.

Twelve Good Yellow Tea Roses.
Yellow in Tea Roses seems to be the popular colour, in addition to which the plants are, as a rule, of stronger constitution than those bearing mixed coloured flowers. More yellow than mixed coloured Teas by far appear in florists' windows, and in going through any large market grower's establishment one cannot but be struck with the predominance of yellow varieties. I am not depreciating the many beautiful forms other than yellow; I admire them as much as anyone; but for the guidance of those who, as producers, are obliged to study fashion in flowers, I give a list of varieties which will be found to give satisfaction either for growing in pots or for planting out in borders in ordinary Rose houses.
...Another free bloomer of the pale yellow section, and one which has held its own for a good many years, is Isabella Sprunt. I cannot say much in its favour as a forcer, but no fault can be found with it when planted out and allowed to come on gradually.
