What I have as “Brownlow Hill Rambler”, and which came to me named as that, and also as ‘Leontine Gervaise’ from a different source, has a flower of about 8cm, from memory (autumn here, no flowers). ‘Mme. Alice Garner’s’ references say that has a small flower, and Charles Quest Ritson pins it down to 3-4cm.

The bloom is from the rose that came as “Brownlow Hill”, and the hips are from the (same) rose that came as ‘Leontine Jervais’. The hip rose is in good soil and the hips are bigger than the bloom rose which is in shade and has root competition from a Sequoia. Does ‘Leontine Gervais’ have hips as big as this in other people’s gardens?

I got confused between Auguste Gervais and Leontine Gervais in New Zealand; photos attached. The first was labelled Auguste Gervais, the second and third were labelled Leontine Gervais in different gardens. 4-6 are my plant (of whichever), which came mislabelled as May Queen. It grows 6m canes in a season (up or downhill), and is fertile as pollen parent and seed parent. Much smaller (and redder) hips than yours but it wasn't watered this summer. Quite good autumn leaf colour.
