[In his breeding program, Edward Burton Le Grice used] the whole range of purple and dark red Gallicas, especially those that were generous with their pollen, such as 'Tuscany Superb' from which came some very strangely coloured seedlings and, indeed some very beautiful ones, for example 'Lilac Charm' (1952), 'News' (1968), and 'Ripples' (1971)...

'News' was a Gold Medal winner in 1970. Bred by Edward Le Grice from 'Lilac Charm' x 'Tuscany Superb', this unusual floribunda clearly scored high marks for novelty. The colour is beetroot purple, fading to purple, the golden yellow anthers providing a pleasant contrast. The flowers are moderately full (18 petals) and borne in medium trusses. Growth is bushy and of average height. I have had black spot on my bushes, but the display bed at St. Albans is very healthy. This is an important colour break and it is most effective when planted next to a pale yellow or cream variety. At St. Albans it looks striking planted adjacent to 'Moon Maiden'.

Mr. Le Grice's 'News' is well named for its new colour in floribundas—a rich beetroot purple I think is the aptest description. The full blown flowers show gold stamens that lighten the effect very well. 'News' is excellent in spring and autumn, but I think our summers bleach out a lot of its unique colour. The only rose in colour similar to 'News' is the modern shrub rose 'Blue Boy' which has not only rich colour but beautiful form in its spring only flowering period.

A second Gold Medal was awarded to News by Le Grice, and this Floribunda was also described last year. It is a remarkably healthy cultivar and, although it has not yet found favour with showmen, it makes a fine decorative rose to mix with pale yellow flowers.

News Floribunda. (LeGrice) The large four inch blooms are a most unusual colour. On opening they are a magenta purple, then pass quickly to a light purple. The yellow stamens and red filaments set off this most unusual colour. There are about ten petals in each flower, and the clusters are good, as is the foliage. The petals drop cleanly, and the repeat flowering is also good. (Lilac Charm x Tuscany Superb.)

News Florib. (Le Grice, 1968). (Lilac Charm x Tuscany) The buds are red but the big semi-double florets are of a unique reddish-purple to amethyst colouring which is highlighted by bright yellow stamens. Many growers and flower arrangers will be extremely enthusiastic over this completely new colour in roses. Try it (and all mauve and purple flowers) with yellows and creams and even with very dark reds. Vigorous and healthy.
