Origin:

Bred by M.S. Viraraghavan (India, 2005).
Introduced in United States by Roses Unlimited in 2004 as 'Incense Indigo'.

Class:

Hybrid Tea.

Bloom:

Mauve or purple blend. Strong fragrance. 26 to 40 petals. Average diameter 5". Medium, full (26-40 petals), borne mostly solitary bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.

Habit:

Medium, bushy. Medium, semi-glossy foliage.

Height: up to 3' (up to 90cm).

Growing:

USDA zone 6b through 9b (default). Can be used for beds and borders, container rose, cut flower, garden, landscape or shrub. Remove spent blooms to encourage re-bloom. Spring Pruning: Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood and cut back canes that cross. In warmer climates, cut back the remaining canes by about one-third. In colder areas, you'll probably find you'll have to prune a little more than that.

Breeder's notes:

Unusally strong damask fragrance.

This has no ‘other name’ ( an Indian one). You can see our alliteration is at work. This variety has richly colored magenta-purple blooms, hybrid tea at bud stage, opening wide to fully double flowers, and with a very strong clove fragrance.
“Incense’ is very much an eastern connotation, conjuring up fragrances of musk and myrrh and spice.
Indigo plants were grown in enormous tracts in north-central India in the late 19th century to supply the color to the drill garments worn by English industrial workers.
