In light of there being so many pictures of roses going around under the name of 'Rose du Roi', I'm uploading some of my plant from Vintage Gardens, who propagated theirs as a reversion from 'Panachee de Lyon'. I've had to try and improve my poor photography to increase sharpness and decrease exposure, but no color alterations were made.
This picture from May 2014 -- one year after planting it as an own-root band -- shows the gawky habit of 'Rose du Roi -- original' as a baby. The sprawling canes are extensions of the cutting from which the rose was produced, whereas the stout cane emerged from the roots.

This picture from May 2014 -- one year after planting it as an own-root band -- manages to ALMOST accurately capture the color -- some of the darker shadings didn't come through.

This picture from May 2014 -- one year after planting it as an own-root band -- shows the about-to-open bud with the "funky extra sepal". Also note foliage and canes -- very much like 'Portlandica', but perhaps more robust.

Although most Damasks and Portlands produce only a seed or two per little hip, the old authors said that Rose du Roi was a prolific producer, and so is the rose in trade in the US. In the foreground is a hip on Rose du Roi "of commerce," and in the background is a hip on Pickering Four Seasons, which is also an exceptional seed producer for a Portland, but not really on the same level. Pickering's hip has the usual shape and color for a Damask, while Rose du Roi's are quite different.
