Dr. A. S. Thomas, Roses In The Cut-Flower Trade.
Ninety per cent of the roses sold in the cut-flower trade are of patented cultivars, It is estimated that 200 million plants of those roses are grown world-wide, Two thirds of the blooms are produced in Europe in 3,000 hectares of glass-houses and polyhouses. At least 20 million of the bushes in these houses are replaced, on average, each year. Almost 5,000 million cut rose blooms are sold each year by florists in the E.E.C. Most of the cultivars grown for the purpose come from Meilland and Kordes. 'Sonia Meilland' retains its popularity as the rose with by far the biggest sales world-wide. Until 1974 'Baccara' held this distinction. Nowadays 'Visaholds second place but only 15 million plants of it are sold annually as against about 40 million of 'Sonia Meilland'.

Dr. A. S. Thomas.  Rosae et Cetera.
p21.  'Bingo' and Sonia are grown in greatest numbers in Israel for the cutflower trade at present.

p23.  In Morocco....hotel decorations consist almost wholly, everywhere, of Sonia brought from Southern France.

p24.  Roses on sale in London are almost wholly Sonia, 'Bingo' and 'Minuette'.  Even in  the summer they are all from "glasshouses" - young, tight blooms.  They and the foliage are free from damage.  They retail at about 90cents (Australian) a bloom even from street barrows, in the summer when roses are blooming in home gardens.

p25.  At least two thirds of the roses in the beautiful florists shops and stalls in Paris and the provincial cities were Sonia.  They were sold at $2 to $2.40 (Australian) a bloom in early September when roses were still in flower out of doors.  The blooms were young, tight uniform and smell but in perfect condition - typical "glasshouse" productions.

p25. We saw few roses in historic Avignon.  They were all in shops and all were Sonia and 'Visa' and 'Bingo'
p27.  [In Switzerland]  Sonia (glasshouse grown) dominated the beautiful flower shops and street stalls along with a few 'Visa'.  The minimum price was about $1.80 (Australian) for each young flower.  In the millions of roses sent to Aalsmere by Israel, Sonia predominates, of course, followed by 'Bingo', 'Visa', 'Minuette' and 'Korgold'.

'Sonia Meilland'    Medium  Rosy  salmon   Remontant    P2    H2  *****
Known in Britain as 'Sweet Promise' and in the cut flower markets of the world as 'Sonia'. This is a highly successful rose for the growers of cut blooms, but it is also one of the finest garden roses for cutting. It needs a good British summer, which suggests that in warmer countries it will be even better than with us. A rose for the flower markets must produce plenty of flowers to sell, and in this respect 'Sonia' is superb. The long, smooth stems are topped by an elegant bloom on the salmon side of pink. If you buy a Hybrid Tea in that colour from a flower shop, it is most likely 'Sonia'. It was bred by Alain Meilland, the son of Francis, and introduced in 1973, bearing his daughter's name.

Dr. A. S. Thomas,  Victoria. Some of the New Ones.
Sonia. HT. (Meilland, 1972). I cannot find any reference to its parentage. A delightful salmon-pink rose of only medium size but of perfect form and slow to open. It has broken into the very exclusive top few roses grown for the lucrative cut flower trade in Europe in an incredibly short time and in a very big way. Named for Alain Meilland's only child.
