Hello all
I have just joined this amazing site.
I am researching the Rose ‘Agatha Christie’. This site has been extremely helpful. All my research tells me that both roses have no known parentage. Can anyone give me any reasons why this should be, especially as one of them was bred by Kordes as recently as 1988.
If you know anything else about this Rose - where and when launched etc I would love to know.

Thank you
Liz

well, for the Kordes rose, Kordes considers its breeding program to be proprietary information, and it chooses not to share parentage info for any of its roses. So it's not surprising that no public info exists. If you have a specific reason for wanting this rose's background, maybe you could write to Kordes and ask them to make an exception on that basis.

Agatha Christie's former home, Greenway, is not far from where I live.

Andrew - I have no idea where this is. I know she was born in Devon and died in Oxfordshire. Miss Marple grew roses but did Agatha Christie herself?!

I'm not sure if she grew roses but she certainly gardened, the National Trust now manage the house and very nice garden. I have visited a couple of times but not recently. The rose was named ten years before Christie's death. The house is near Dartmouth in Devon in the south-west of England (the bit at the bottom below Wales that sticks out into the Atlantic).

Thank you very much for all this info’ especially the National Trust reference. I am a member of the NT and had no idea of Greenway existence. I have had a good read of the website and have emailed them about roses. Mind you until recently I knew little about Agatha Christie. Greenway is on my list of places to visit ; I can only be about 50 miles East. Thank you again. Happy gardening.

I've also been to Greenway quite a few times, as I used to live nearby, and could walk there, but always in Spring when the Camellias are in bloom, in fact it will look great right about now. I have a Camellia I got solely after seeing it at Greenway...
No idea about roses there, I don't recall seeing any, but I wasn't looking for them at that time of year..
It's most picturesque along the river, and you can see several places Christie included in her books..
The house is also full of interest.. do try and get there if you can, it's rather lovely all around that area in fact..

Marlorena and Liz, do you fancy meeting up at Mottisfont at mid-summer?

Andrew... thanks so much for that invitation, that's so thoughtful and friendly, and I would really be up for that except my home commitments are such that it prevents me leaving town these days... I do have a NT property nearby with roses, so I'm not totally without a garden to visit, but Mottisfont is incomparable. Perhaps another time, I do hope so...

I hope Liz can make it...or that you both at least get to Greenway again...

I have tried to get to Mottisfont on several occasions but rather like you there have been commitments in Devon, family commitments in Sussex or boring stuff like work and it has not been possible. I have a significant birthday in June and I said to my partner it will be a special present to myself to visit and we must clear all schedules at the height of the rose season and go. If you manage to go sometime in the future and want a fellow rose maniac to accompany you as well please let me know or if you are ever near RHS Rosemoor I'm only 10 minutes away. I shall take loads of pictures and post them on HMF so at least you can see a little of how beautiful it will be.

Andrew, I can't wait to see the photos that you will be taking, and yes of course if I'm ever down that way I would love to meet up and visit Rosemoor, it was one of my favourite gardens when I lived in Brixham, along with Greenway. Knightshayes Court was another I remember..
Do have a lovely time in June, won't be long now. I shall hope that it's not raining for you on the day, it so often is at that time, but I've been there in the rain and somehow it doesn't seem to matter..

I am sorry I did not get back to you Andrew. I have finished my research on Agatha Christie and roses; the reason I logged into Help Me Find. I am sure I will use it again in future research. I went to Mottisfont last year; it is well worth a visit, so go if you can. As a Rose enthusiast and writer you may be interested in my library at www.therosarianlibrary.co.uk Have a good summer with your roses.

Thank you Marlorena.; you make it sound great. My interest is roses rather than Agatha Christie but I am getting involved with her more by the day. I have even ordered two of her books, which involve roses of course!

I hope you enjoy those books Liz... I missed the recent Ordeal By Innocence, on the t.v. and I admit to still enjoying the old Miss Marple films with Margaret Rutherford, even though Miss Christie did not approve apparently..
I did thoroughly enjoy 'And Then There Were None' which was on a couple of years ago, I thought that was just brilliant and had me on the edge of my seat...

Sometimes I think I've been 'poisoned' with roses, but fortunately it's more of a relaxant..

Thank you very much for this information; I was unaware of this. I have emailed them but so far no response.
Best wishes
